On June 6th, at 8:00 am, the HyVee Mini Triathlon participants were signaled to GO!
Let's look back and see how (and why) I was in lake Kampeska on a rainy 45 degree morning.
It started on almost a bet, which kicked off many early morning training sessions which I thought were going to culminate on a rainy April day in Brookings. I had so much fun at the Brookings "I'm Ready for Summer Mini Tri" that I knew I had to triathlon again.
But then I got the flu, and after that I got an upper respiratory infection. Two full weeks of no swimming, running or biking.
The first thing I did when I got better was to do my personal TT loop in my home town. I was amazed when I beat my goal time by a full 7 seconds. This got me motivated to do a TT, which I did on 30 May 09 in Watertown. This was an amazing chance to preview the bike course for the Watertown Mini Triathlon.
Talking to more experienced triathletes after the TT, I realized I was going to have to find a wet suit that week before the tri on Saturday. I was luck enough to get connected with Jon from trinationsports.com. He was an amazing source of advice and was more than able to fulfill my order.
So by Wednesday the week of the tri, I had already ridden the bike course, finished my last training run and had a wet suit on order. Some final items to take care of Friday night were to get my wet suit and practice my transtions. Had great fun with that.
The day of the event was cold and rainy. The water felt like daggers of ice once it found its way to my skin through the neck of my wetsuit. Little did I know, the swim was going to be the warmest part of the event.
Wanting to get through the transitions as soon as possible, I skipped the rain coat and gloves. Bad idea. My hands were so cold at T2, that I couldn't lace my shoes.
Overall I ended up in 5th place. I am very happy with the way the event went. I shivered from the cold for an hour afterwards, but it was all worth it.

Welcome to Dave is Loop'd.
Triathlons are great fun. The are inspiring to watch and the results are often astounding. It is amazing what the human body is capable of doing, and doing quickly.
I've had a lot of fun in during my first triathlon season, and now with some great results under my race belt I'm inspired to keep going. It will take not only an incredible amount of dedication, but also a considerable amount of money. The purpose of this Loop'd profile is to reach out to companies and individuals intersted in helping someone live out their dreams.
Please contact me if interested in extending sponsorship or if you know of any opportunities.
Thank you,
David J. Ulschmid
